Saylor Revives Strategy’s Bitcoin Purchase Mystery

Speculation over a renewed bitcoin purchase emerged Sunday after Strategy Inc. (Nasdaq: MSTR) Executive Chairman Michael Saylor posted the company’s holdings chart without describing its next treasury action. Saylor shared the cryptic message Aug. 30 on X as investors awaited Strategy’s next disclosure following two consecutive weeks without a bitcoin transaction.

The attached chart showed Strategy holding 840,447 BTC, with the reserve valued at $65.72 billion. It also plotted the company’s transactions against bitcoin’s market price and average acquisition cost. The message itself contained two words, with Saylor substituting the bitcoin symbol inside the final word as he stated:

“We’re ₿ack.”

The post functions as a potential signal rather than a transaction disclosure, leaving the company’s regulatory filings to establish whether its holdings changed. Strategy’s Aug. 24 filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission reported 840,447 BTC acquired for $63.36 billion at an average price of $75,385 per bitcoin, including fees and expenses.

Saylor’s post followed a sharp bitcoin price recovery that began Aug. 19, when BTC climbed from around $65K and moved above $75K by Aug. 21. Bitcoin reached around $81K on Aug. 27 before trading near $79K as of this writing on Aug. 30.

$6.69 Billion in Dollar Liquidity

Strategy reported no bitcoin purchases or sales between Aug. 17 and Aug. 23, leaving its reserve unchanged for a second consecutive week. The company instead sold approximately $2.01 billion in MSTR shares, increased its restricted USD Reserve to $5.10 billion, established $1.59 billion in USD Cash, and repurchased $136.4 million of STRC preferred stock.

The capital shift had halted bitcoin buying while lifting combined dollar liquidity to $6.69 billion. Unlike the USD Reserve, which supports preferred-stock dividends and interest payments, the separate USD Cash account may finance bitcoin acquisitions, securities repurchases, convertible-note repayments, or further reserve increases.

Strategy’s official bitcoin ledger records every disclosed acquisition and sale, including four sales totaling 6,916 BTC after its most recent purchase June 22. The latest sale involved 1,690 BTC for $108.6 million during the Aug. 3-9 period, reducing the company’s holdings to their current level of 840,447 BTC.

A bitcoin corporate treasury holds BTC as a corporate reserve asset, using cash, equity, debt, or other securities to finance its position. Strategy pioneered that model in August 2020 and remains the largest publicly traded corporate bitcoin holder, controlling approximately 4% of bitcoin’s fixed 21 million supply.

Saylor Expands His Bitcoin Message

The renewed transaction speculation follows a series of broader statements from Saylor about bitcoin’s role in global finance. He recently called for a “Bitcoin Reformation” beyond early ideological orthodoxy, arguing that institutional custody, banks, corporations, governments, and bitcoin-linked securities can expand access while direct ownership remains available.

Saylor also described bitcoin’s “most profound breakthrough” as digitally controlled economic value. He said that capability can apply to individuals, families, companies, machines, and nations, extending his characterization of bitcoin from peer-to-peer electronic cash into digital capital.

Strategy’s next filing will establish whether “We’re ₿ack” accompanied a renewed acquisition or signaled another treasury decision. The company entered the latest reporting period with $1.59 billion in flexible USD Cash that its board may deploy toward bitcoin, dividends, debt obligations, security repurchases, or other corporate treasury purposes.
