Trump and His Bitcoin Strategy Face Midterm Risks as Democrats Take Congress

by John Paterson

Trump and his Bitcoin strategy face a new political challenge after Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress in the 2026 midterm elections. The result could complicate President Donald Trump’s crypto agenda and bring renewed scrutiny to his family’s digital asset businesses.

The political shift arrived as Trump-linked crypto assets suffered sharp losses. Official Trump (TRUMP) plunged more than 20% on November 4, briefly touching a record low near $1.22. Meanwhile, Bitcoin recovered from its election-night decline, showing its resilience.

In other news, Trump Media & Technology Group also moved 4,259 Bitcoin, worth $342 million, to Crypto.com, according to Arkham. The transfer raised questions about the company’s treasury strategy, particularly as investors prepare for a major debt repayment deadline later this month.

Democrats’ Midterm Victory Puts Trump’s Crypto Businesses Under Pressure

Democrats’ victory gives the party control of congressional committees with the power to investigate the Trump administration and its business interests.

Democratic lawmakers have already raised concerns about Trump-linked crypto ventures, including World Liberty Financial and the president’s memecoin. With control of key oversight committees, they could demand documents, hold hearings, and subpoena witnesses once the new Congress takes office in January.

The investigations could create uncertainty for Trump’s crypto businesses, even without new legislation. Any disclosures involving token sales, foreign investments, or potential conflicts of interest could affect investor confidence.

The political shift could also slow Trump’s crypto agenda. Legislation designed to establish clearer rules for digital assets may face a tougher path through Congress, while regulators could face greater pressure to scrutinize the industry.

Still, Democrats taking Congress does not automatically mean a crackdown on Bitcoin or even Trump. The party includes lawmakers who support crypto innovation, and congressional investigations do not necessarily translate into new restrictions.

Trump Media’s Bitcoin Transfer Raises Questions

The timing of Trump Media’s Bitcoin transfer adds another layer to the story. The 4,259 BTC movement closely matches the 4,260.73 BTC the company previously disclosed as collateral for its convertible notes. The transfer came as noteholders prepare for a November 30 deadline to request cash repayment, potentially requiring Trump Media to pay around $1 billion.

The company has not confirmed that it sold the Bitcoin. Similar transfers to Crypto.com were previously described as custody or trading-management moves.

However, Trump Media’s latest securities filing warned that it could need to sell Bitcoin or other digital assets if refinancing or other measures fail to cover repayment obligations. That makes the transfer worth watching, even if it does not prove a sale.

Bitcoin itself has shown a different reaction to the election and Trump current scrutiny. The cryptocurrency rebounded toward $80,000 after an initial decline, while Trump-linked tokens remained under pressure.

Was Bitcoin Created to Escape Politics?

Market Cap

Bitcoin was created in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, when trust in banks and government-led financial rescues had weakened. Its design offers an alternative to traditional money. Bitcoin’s supply is governed by its protocol; transactions can be verified without banks, and no president can simply order the network to print more coins.

But Bitcoin was never designed to make politics irrelevant. It was designed to reduce the need to trust political and financial institutions to operate money.

Governments still influence crypto through taxation, regulation, exchange access, institutional investment, and custody rules. Political decisions can therefore move prices even when they cannot change Bitcoin’s underlying code.

Trump’s crypto ventures bring that contradiction into our views. An industry built around financial independence now has assets whose value can rise or fall with the fortunes of a sitting president.

The midterms and Trump scrutiny may not change Bitcoin fundamentals overnight. But they show how deeply crypto has become tied to Washington, and how quickly political power can become a market risk.
